When Lin Xiao moved into this high-rise apartment in the city center, she felt she had struck gold. The rent was unbelievably low, and the decor was minimalist and modern. There was only one strange feature: the walls of the master bedroom seemed much thicker than usual, and in the dead of night, a very faint rubbing sound, like someone moving slowly inside the walls, could be heard.

During the first week, Lin Xiao attributed the sound to the thermal expansion and contraction of the old building or plumbing vibrations. As a freelance writer, she was accustomed to working late into the night. Whenever she typed on her keyboard, a faint, synchronized echo would emanate from deep within the walls, as if an invisible entity were pressed against the other side, mimicking her rhythm.

Behind the seemingly solid wall was a suffocatingly narrow crawlspace. The space was only about forty centimeters wide, just enough to accommodate a curled-up human body. Her heart pounded violently; shining her phone's flashlight inside, she discovered a few filthy old blankets and a pile of her missing personal items: a single sock, a few fallen hairs, and a candid photo of her sleeping.
