The only thing that made him uncomfortable was the massive, original built-in mirror in the bathroom; it was too clear—so clear that he sometimes felt the image within wasn't just an optical reflection, but an opponent observing him.

While washing his face, he noticed a minute inconsistency: when he leaned down to rinse and then quickly looked back up at the mirror, the version of him in the reflection seemed to hesitate for a fraction of a second. It felt like a dropped frame in a movie, or a lagged video stream over a bad network.

In that instant, the creature in the mirror violently slammed against the glass with a thunderous boom. The glass didn't shatter, but the fingertips of the mirror-person actually penetrated the cold surface, touching Lin Yuan's cheek as if touching thin air. The sensation wasn't that of skin, but an extreme, ice-like coldness. A whisper echoed in Lin Yuan's ear, a voice identical to his own, yet carrying a hungry cruelty: "Finally, it's my turn to go out."
