The Prologue

In the fast-paced life of a modern city, we are accustomed to spending the first and last ten minutes of every day in front of a mirror. Washing our faces, brushing our teeth, adjusting ties—these mechanical actions make us overlook the nature of the mirrored image. We take it for granted that a mirror is merely an optical reflection, a faithful duplicate. But what happens if this duplicate begins to develop a 'discrepancy'?

The Core Terror

Lin Yuan was a high-pressure corporate professional at an advertising agency. His life was filled with precise alarms, cold coffee, and the endless glow of screens. He lived in a minimalist apartment, where a massive floor-to-ceiling mirror was installed in the bathroom—not just for aesthetics, but to allow him to quickly check his appearance during rushed mornings. The first anomaly occurred on a Wednesday late at night.

He had worked overtime until two in the morning and was mentally exhausted. As he splashed cold water on his face to wake himself up, he felt a subtle 'disharmony.' The moment he looked up into the mirror, he felt as though his image hadn't kept pace. It was an extremely minute lag, like the millisecond stutter encountered during a video call. He blinked, and his reflection blinked, but Lin Yuan swore that the reflection's blink was a fraction of a second slower than his own.

Initially, he attributed it to visual illusions caused by fatigue. But over the following week, this disharmony evolved into a sense of oppression. Whenever he gazed into the mirror, he could catch details being 'misaligned.' Once, while brushing his teeth, as he stopped and leaned down to spit out the foam, he saw through the corner of his eye that his reflection continued brushing for about half a second longer. Lin Yuan froze, cold sweat instantly soaking his pajamas. He slowly raised his head, and the man in the mirror was smiling at him—a smile he wasn't making, with the corners of the mouth curled up to an unsettling degree.

He began to fear mirrors, but mirrors are everywhere in modern life. The walls of elevators, store windows, and even the black reflection of a phone screen when it turns off. He noticed that the 'other him' was shortening the lag time. It wasn't just about the delay; the reflection began to exhibit 'agency.' One late night, while showering, the steam blurred the mirror. He wiped a clear circle with his hand and looked into his own eyes. In that moment, he discovered with horror that the reflection wasn't wiping the glass; instead, it was pressing both hands firmly against the inside of the mirror, eyes filled with hunger and anxiety, as if imprisoned in another dimension and desperate for a breakthrough.

The most terrifying event occurred on Friday morning. Lin Yuan was tying his tie in front of the mirror. He realized that this time, the situation had reversed. He hadn't moved his hands yet, but the reflection had already finished the knot and lightly patted the collar. The mirrored Lin Yuan winked at him and slowly pressed a finger against the glass. Lin Yuan felt a sudden chill—not from the surface of the glass, but a coldness that seeped directly into his skin. The figure in the mirror suddenly lunged forward, and the once flat surface of the mirror rippled violently like water.

Lin Yuan screamed and instinctively backed away, but his ankle was suddenly seized by a cold, hard, and immensely powerful hand. The hand emerged from the mirror, violently dragging him into the depths of the glass. In the final second of fading consciousness, Lin Yuan saw the other him—the perfect, lag-free duplicate—step slowly out of the mirror frame and into his bathroom, putting on his clothes with a look of victory. And Lin Yuan himself was imprisoned forever in that cold, inverted world, forever lagging one second behind, forced to watch through the glass as that monster posing as himself began to take over his entire life.

Urban Legend Trivia

This story is inspired by the 'Mirror Entity' urban legend. In many cultures, mirrors are seen as portals between two worlds. Psychologically, when a person stares at their own eyes in a mirror for a long time, they experience the 'Troxler's fading' effect, causing the brain to misprocess visual information, making the face appear to distort or hallucinate. This is the real-world basis for many 'mirror horror' legends. Warning: If you notice your reflection smiling at you while you are not, leave the room immediately and cover all mirrors.
