The Prologue

For most young professionals struggling in the city, poor soundproofing in rental apartments is a norm. The walls are thin enough to hear a neighbor's cough or the heavy thud of footsteps in the corridor. Such an environment is unsettling, but for Lin Yuan, it was simply a part of life. Until he discovered that some sounds should not exist within this enclosed space.

The Core Terror

Lin Yuan's primary concern when moving into this 7th-floor apartment in an old downtown building was the cheap rent. The room was spacious, but the walls were painted in a disturbing cement gray. The first week was normal. But by the second week, a sense of "discordance" began to seep quietly into his daily routine.

At first, the sounds were minute. Every time he brushed his teeth in the bathroom, he felt as if there was a synchronized brushing sound coming from inside the wall behind the mirror. He tried holding his breath, and the sound would stop accordingly. He assumed it was a coincidence with the neighbor, until one day, returning home from late-night overtime, as he took off his shoes in the entryway, he clearly heard a low voice in the living room say: "You're back."

Lin Yuan whipped around; the living room was empty. Moonlight filtered through the loose curtains, slicing the floor into irregular shadows. His heart raced, cold sweat soaking his shirt. He told himself it might be an auditory hallucination or some strange acoustic refraction. However, over the next few days, this phenomenon became increasingly precise and malicious. The voice began to "mimic" him.

The most chilling incident occurred late Wednesday night. Lin Yuan was tossing and turning in bed, realizing he had forgotten to turn off the kitchen light. He got up and headed toward the kitchen, and as he passed through the hallway, he subconsciously muttered a curse: "Dammit." In that exact second, from behind him—from the bedroom he had just left—came the exact same voice, with the same intonation, the same anger, and the same timbre: "Dammit."

He froze, his spine feeling as if it had been brushed with ice. He realized that the entity wasn't making random noises; it was "learning" him. It was waiting for him to speak, then quickly capturing and reflecting it, like an acoustic mirror. He began to fear speaking inside the house, and even feared breathing loudly. He locked his door, but the feeling persisted: someone was in a blind spot he couldn't see, smiling at him using his own voice.

The ultimate breakdown happened on a stormy night. Lin Yuan was awakened from his sleep by a faint tapping sound. It wasn't a knock on the door, but someone lightly tapping the wall with a fingernail. Thump, thump, thump. He sat up in terror and discovered the sound was coming from the wall directly behind his headboard. Suddenly, a voice whispered softly in his ear. It was his voice, but with a nauseating, viscous quality: "Lin Yuan, I'm inside."

He whipped around and saw a human-shaped bulge appearing on the wallpaper, as if someone were attempting to squeeze their body out from inside the cement wall. The bulge moved slowly, and as it did, it continuously repeated everything Lin Yuan had said over the past few days. The voices overlapped, forming a chaotic and frenzied echo. Lin Yuan screamed and rushed toward the door, but the moment he gripped the handle, he heard behind him the sound he feared most—the sound of his own desperate scream, as if realizing he had already been replaced.

Urban Legend Trivia

This story is inspired by the modern urban legend of "The Mimic." In many cultures, creatures capable of mimicking human voices are considered dangerous predators. In real life, this fear is transformed into an anxiety over the "distortion of familiarity." If you hear a family member's or your own voice in your home, but the source is clearly in the wrong direction, psychology might suggest a stress-induced hallucination, but in urban legends, this is seen as a warning signal that a "Replacer" is synchronizing with your traits, preparing to take your place.
