The Prologue

For most young professionals struggling in the city, finding a reasonably priced, modern apartment feels like winning the lottery. Lin Xiao thought so too. Located on the 12th floor of a renovated old-district apartment in the city center, the unit featured perfect natural light and a minimalist industrial design. However, during her first week, she began to notice small, almost negligible inconsistencies. It was the feeling that someone had subtly moved her toothbrush, or the sensation upon waking in the dead of night that the air in the room felt slightly heavier than usual.

The Core Terror

At first, Lin Xiao attributed these occurrences to the adjustment period after moving. She led a disciplined life: working at a hectic advertising agency by day and reading or scrolling through her phone in the quiet of her apartment by night. But as time passed, the feeling of "being watched" intensified. Whenever she showered, she could sense a vague shadow lingering outside the bathroom door; whenever she wore headphones to listen to music, she could faintly hear a low, rasping sound, like scales scraping against a wall.

The turning point occurred on a stormy night. Due to a power failure, the entire building plunged into a brief blackout. Lin Xiao lit a few candles, and in the flickering light, she suddenly noticed a chilling detail: there was a tiny gap in her bedroom wall, previously hidden by a large wardrobe. Inside that gap, a pair of emotionless eyes were staring back at her. She froze, her heartbeat drumming heavily in the dead silence of the room. She realized that the sounds, the displaced items, and the crushing pressure had all come from inside the walls—this apartment, before renovation, had a sealed but accessible interstitial space.

Terror transformed into an extreme physiological reaction. She tried to flee, but as she rushed toward the main door, she heard a soft, human-like yet distorted chuckle right behind her. The sound was in her ear, even though there was no one there. Frantically, she pushed aside the wardrobe, discovering a hidden, narrow door behind it; the lock had long been broken. Trembling, she reached inside, touching something cold, slimy, and leather-like. An incredibly thin creature with twisted limbs was curled up in that narrow space less than thirty centimeters wide. How long had it been living there? Had it been crawling out of the walls every night while she slept, leaning over her bed to gaze at her sleeping face?

Lin Xiao eventually fled the apartment screaming, but she discovered the nightmare had only just begun. Recalling every second spent in that apartment, she realized the creature wasn't just observing—it was mimicking. It mimicked her breathing frequency, her walking rhythm. The most devastating realization came a week after she moved: while showering in her new home, she saw a faint fingerprint on the bathroom mirror. The size and shape of that print were identical to the claws she had seen in the gap of the old apartment walls. It had followed her.

Urban Legend Trivia

(The Man in the Wall) 傳說。

This story is inspired by the modern urban legend of "The Man in the Wall." In many renovation projects of old apartments in major cities, "dead spaces" or interstitial gaps often remain due to structural changes. The real-life horror lies in the fact that our private spaces are not absolutely private. If you notice small displacements of household items or hear unnatural, rhythmic tapping inside the walls at night, be sure to check for hidden gaps behind your furniture. Because some things, once they grow accustomed to your scent, never want to leave you again.
