The Prologue
In the bustling modern metropolis, we lock ourselves within the square inches of a concrete jungle, believing that door locks and passwords are the ultimate guarantees of safety. But we forget that within the structure of buildings, there are always forgotten crevices. This is a story of 'symbiosis'—about a home you thought belonged to you alone, which was actually being treated as a hunting ground by someone else.恐懼核心 / The Core Terror
Lin Yu was a typical urban white-collar worker, renting an apartment in a high-rise building in the city center. While the apartment was modern, its layout was somewhat peculiar, especially the deep built-in closet by the bedroom wall and a storage room at the end of the hallway that was always locked.
It started with the displacement of objects. He remembered placing his car keys on the entryway tray, but the next morning, the keys were on the edge of the dining table. He attributed it to forgetfulness caused by fatigue. Then came the sounds—in the dead of night, when it was so quiet he could hear his own heartbeat, a very faint scraping sound would emanate from inside the walls, like someone slowly scratching the wallpaper with a fingernail, or the sound of heavy fabric being dragged across a rough floor.
Lin Yu tried to convince himself it was pipe vibration or noise from neighbors, but the feeling remained like a thorn in his subconscious, constantly reminding him: he was not alone. One day, he noticed a faint fingerprint on the bathroom mirror, which he had just wiped clean after showering. Even more unsettling was the discovery that his supply of snacks and drinking water was gradually diminishing, and the amount missing was precisely calculated, as if someone were deliberately maintaining the bare minimum needed for survival.
The fear peaked in the third week. That night, Lin Yu was jolted awake from a dream by an intense sensation of being watched. He opened his eyes to find the bedroom light appearing ghastly pale under the moonlight. Slowly, he turned his head toward the massive built-in closet and noticed that the door had been opened by about two centimeters. In that sliver of darkness, he saw a pair of eyes—or rather, two pupils capturing the faint light, staring fixedly at his face.
He screamed in terror and rushed to fling open the closet door. It was empty; his clothes were hanging neatly. However, when he looked down at the floor of the closet, he discovered a hidden trapdoor cleverly concealed under the dark brown carpet. Trembling, he opened the hatch, and a pungent stench of decay mixed with sweat wafted up. Beneath the floor was a narrow crawlspace that connected to the interior walls of the entire house. There, he found a crude 'nest': a few torn newspapers serving as a bed, his missing toothbrush, a half-empty bottle of water, and a photograph of himself sleeping, taken from a distance of mere inches.
Lin Yu realized that person had been by his side all along. While he bathed, the intruder listened from behind the walls; while he slept, the intruder breathed beside his ear. Most devastatingly, after he called the police, officers discovered multiple similar small holes in the wall gaps, sufficient for a slender person to observe every corner of the house without being detected. When the squatter was arrested, he said one thing to the police: 'I just liked watching him live, like watching a movie that never ends.'
This story is inspired by the extremely rare but real phenomenon known as 'Phrogging.' This involves illegally entering someone's residence and living there for an extended period without being detected. In many old or complexly designed apartments, ceiling voids, spaces behind closets, or basement passages are often utilized by phroggers. Warning signs in real life include: slight and illogical shifts in the position of household items, finding hair or smells that don't belong to you, and hearing faint footsteps or breathing in the dead of night that shouldn't be there. Please be sure to check the depths of your storage rooms and closets.
