When Lin Xiao moved into this new high-rise apartment in the city center, everything seemed perfect. The minimalist industrial design, the thick soundproof walls, and the kind of silence at midnight that felt reassuring. However, on a rainy night during her third week, she began to realize that something discordant was hidden within the building's 'silence.' It was a hallucination hovering on the edge of consciousness, as if someone on the other side of the wall was mimicking her breathing.

What unsettled her most was that these sounds weren't just noise; they were 'mimicking.' When she coughed, a synchronized light cough would echo from deep within the walls; when she typed on her keyboard late at night, a clicking sound of the same frequency would drift from the adjacent room. This wasn't ordinary neighbor noise, but a precise, pathological counterpoint.

She lived alone; the doors and windows were all locked. Trembling, she walked toward the bedroom; with every step she took, the 'voice' stopped, and whenever she paused, the humming resumed right beside her ear, so close she could almost feel a cold breath on the nape of her neck.

It wasn't speaking; it was 'playing back' her memories. Lin Xiao tried to scream, but to her horror, she found her throat incapable of making a sound. Meanwhile, the monster let out a violent, realistic scream using her voice, loud enough to shatter the glass on her nightstand.

She realized the creature didn't intend to kill her, but to 'replace' her. It was learning her voice, her habits, learning how to become a perfect version of Lin Xiao. Once it mastered every trait, the real Lin Xiao would become the shadow imprisoned deep within the walls, capable only of emitting faint echoes. In the end, Lin Xiao looked in the mirror and saw her own reflection begin to blur, while a gentle voice whispered in her ear. It was her own voice saying: 'Now, it's my turn to live.'

This story is inspired by the urban legend of 'Audio Mimics.' In the apartment culture of many modern cities, people often hear unexplained noises. However, the true warning sign is this: if you are alone and hear your own voice coming from another room, or hear someone calling your name with an unnaturally stiff intonation, absolutely do not respond. Because once you answer, you are sending a signal of 'recognition,' allowing the entity to complete its synchronization and replacement of you in the physical world.
